… my Top 5 Tips for TAKING ACTION

I get it, that’s exactly how I felt. In 2011, I was in a great corporate job, earning money, benefitting from all the accompanying perks yet feeling trapped and unhappy, knowing I wanted something different. Don’t get me wrong, I needed and appreciated the money at the end of the month but really wanted to earn it building something I could be proud of. I wanted to love my work but also be there for my family. So, I came to a decision – and yes it was a bit scary – but having made up my mind and not being one to hang around, I launched myself into the unknown with the following action steps which I’d like to share with you.
Today, I don’t recognise the woman I was then. I’m living the life I want, earning the money I need, loving what I do and spending lots of family time. I’m so grateful I shut my eyes and made the leap! But I had to take massive action, and when broken down simply – this is what I did! Short on time? Action Tip 1: WHY?
Why are you currently doing what you’re doing? And what is it you want to change? Maybe it’s a job you’re not enjoying, a relationship that’s not working, eating habits you want to alter? You know you need to take action to feel better but before you can do that you have to be crystal clear why you’re doing what you’re currently doing and who you’re doing it for? Answer those two questions honestly and you’ll find yourself on the first step to the rest of your life.
Action Tip 2: JUST DO IT!
I’ll come straight out and admit I’m not a morning person! In the past I tended to hit the snooze button far too often, even though I knew those extra stolen minutes invariably made me groggy, grumpy, guilty and running late for the rest of the day.
Now, when that alarm sounds, I don’t give myself the option. Why? Because it wasn’t doing me any good. I count down, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and I’m up. To quote Nike, JUST DO IT! 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 GO! Try it, see if you agree.

Action Tip 3. OBSESS THE SKILL
Which areas of your life would you like to improve right now? I’d recommend getting obsessive, give it some welly!
- Download free Ted Talks onto your phone.
- Listen to free podcasts on the go – there are so many brilliant
- Use apps like Audible (linked to your Kindle account) listen in the car/on the train/walking the dog. Find pockets of time in the day to go back to school to learn who and what inspires you, to constantly work at getting better at whatever it is you want to do.
- Don’t get overwhelmed, focus on one thing, and go from there.
- Google your topic and plug in to the best resources.
Action Tip 4. LIVE YOUR BRAND
What is your brand, what do you represent as a person? If you don’t know, grab some paper, put your name in the middle and mind map different words you’d use to describe yourself. You might also want to text three friends or colleagues. Ask them for the three words they’d use to describe you. The results will give you the opportunity to see what you stand for, how you want to be seen. Maybe it’s fun, loyal, ambitious or hardworking. From this point on you’ll have a clearer picture of who you are and how others see you – write your own story and live it out with action, enthusiasm and intent.
Action Tip 5. STEP AWAY FROM YOUR PHONE!
Distracted by messages, emails, notifications and social media? Then it’s time for a detox. Disable your alerts so they only appear when you open the app – on your terms and in your own time. You don’t need to know what everyone is saying or doing every moment of the day. It overwhelms and confuses your brain making you unproductive – a proven scientific fact and one we really all knew without being told.
Social Media is here to stay, and my motto is: embrace it, leverage it and restrict it! You decide how and when to engage, practice turning it off, only going in for 5 – 10 minutes at a time. Be mindful of the time you spend. If you need help, there are Apps such as Moment to track just how many minutes you’re spending (wasting?) on your phone each day. I’ll warn you now, the results can be gob-smacking and unsurprisingly have a direct correlation to your productivity.
WHAT ACTION TIP RESONATES MOST WITH YOU?
Take just one tip (two maximum) and focus for the next 21 days (the time it takes to form a habit). Once you’ve got that under your belt, take the next action tip and work on that until it becomes part of you. Change happens through bitesize actions building over a period of time. You may not see or feel a difference immediately, but trust me, in time you won’t recognise the person you’ve become! It’s time to start a revolution, to live the lives we want to and love – to live a blessed life. Are you with me?
