I can hear your eye rolls already…I get it!
If I have to read one more article telling me how I can be the “most organised, working mum/wife, who volunteers in her ‘spare time’ and bakes homemade cakes, while managing to read & sew” I may lose the plot. However, we all have the same 24 hours in each day!
So how is it that we perceive others to get so much done, while we feel like we’re falling hopelessly behind?
I definitely used to feel this way, but what I’ve found is that we will ALWAYS make time for the things that are a priority to us! I can hear you saying, “well everything is a priority, so how do I get it all done?”
Let me ask you…
Just before we are about to go on a holiday … why is it that we manage to plough through that enormous to do list – culling our inboxes with precision, squeezing in that nail appointment in our lunchbreak, all the while juggling work/life/kids/cooking supper? Yes, we may be packing at midnight for our 6am taxi pick-up, but we do it. Why? How?
It’s the adage that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”. Think about when you have a deadline in 2 weeks’ time, trying to find the motivation to do it bit by bit now can be quite a challenge, but when it’s the night before and it has to be done the next day – you get it done!
That may be fine for deadlines but how do we manage our day to day lives, and long lists of to-dos? And why is it always the case that the busier we are, the more we seem to get done?
Here’s the million-dollar secret…
We will NEVER complete everything on our “to-do” lists, because as human beings and by our very nature, we will always be adding more to it.
This is extremely frustrating for my ‘Type A’/ Virgo personality, because I want to do it all perfectly and tick everything off the list.
Life is also the busiest it’s ever been, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down, only speeding up more as technology and social media increase!
So, how can we make this work for us, instead of against us?
These days, rather than concerning myself around my ‘busyness’, as people often say to me “how do you do all you do, you are so busy”. I simply focus on this: when you say “yes” to something, you’re saying “no” to something else. Simple as.
It’s helped me to say “no” a lot more to things I would have previously felt obliged to say to yes to. Which as a ‘recovering people pleaser’, can still be quite a challenge at times!
I do firmly believe that women can have it all…
And that it doesn’t have to be at the expense of doing the things we love or ourselves. I am determined to live a fun, varied and happy life, doing the things I love to do, with the people I love the most – and doing less of what I don’t like; life admin, chores and work that doesn’t light my fire!
These days, I am all about efficiency, and I have found the following cool tips and tricks have really helped me with streamlining my life, and focusing on what’s important.
